How To Create And Send Video Email For Free

Do you find text emails ineffective? If so you are not alone. Today anyone with a webcam or iPhone can quickly and easily create and send video messages for free. You don’t have to record videos with expensive equipment, and you don’t have to download software. Best of all no expertise is required. If you can create and send text email you can send video email.

Most people believe that sending videos means recording very large files with a camcorder, and trying to attach it to an email. It usually doesn’t work due to email file attachment size limits. mailVU.com is a solution that doesn’t require camcorders or file attachments.

mailVU.com has a free video mail service that doesn’t require a software download, and it doesn’t require a user account.

Watch this 2-minute video email tutorial, or follow the step-by-step process below for creating your first free video email.

What do you need for video mail?

mailVU.com

Begin by opening any browser (Internet Explorer, Chrome, Firefox, Safari, etc.) and going to http://mailVU.com. You will be prompted by the following request to allow access to your webcam. Select Allow.

Now you should be able to see yourself in the Live Camera window. If you don’t see yourself click on the drop down list of cameras and select the one that works for you. On the Mac it is typically called USB Webcam.

Click the red Record button above your image to start the 10 minute recording session. This button will change to Stop after you click it, a notification will appear that recording is in process, and a timer counts down from 10 minutes. When done click the red Stop button.

Now that the recording is made the information at the bottom of the screen is available to use.  If desired you can click the Play button to play back your message.  You may play it as often as you like. If you want to record over your message, click the red Record button again to overwrite it. When you are happy with your recording decide if you want to email it, or share it with the short URL link.

The account version of mailVU allows you to set a self-destruct criteria on each video mail. This will destroy the video link after a number of views or number of days. The account versions of mailVU also save all your videos to a dashboard. If you use mailVU’s free iPhone/iPad app you can save all those videos to your account as well – and use the self destruct feature.

Fill in the email address fields, and you have the option of adding a text message to your video mail.  Separate email addresses with a comma.  You can copy yourself if you click the box at the bottom, and you have the option of being notified every time the recipient views the video. When done click Send Email. Congratulations! You have now sent your first video email!  To send this same video to more people enter their email addresses in the form, modify any text that you want, and then click Send Email again.  You can do this as many times as you want for the same video.  You will receive a Send confirmation email.  In that email you have the option of immediately retracting and deleting the video if you have second thoughts.

When this mailVU user sends out videos, the recipient can check out more information on his business by clicking the HTML links at the bottom of the message!

The user will receive an email less than 25kb in size that opens with a picture of you linking to your video message. They click on your picture to play and they will be able to hear and see you. To record a video message back to you they can follow this same process by going to http://mailVU.com.

    Hi;
I think this tool is great.
    I have two questions:
1- What is the bandwidth required to use it?
2- Could we edit the file? I saw you can embed the file on a website and I want to know if it is possible to edit it

    Thanks for this great tool
    Mayte

Hi Mayte, and thanks for the comments. 192kb of upload bandwidth is our recommended minimum. The way our service works now is you can’t edit, but have to re-record the video again. After recording you can play it back and determine if you want to email it, or if not, click Record again to over-right it.

We’ve started deploying the embedded version last Friday. A good implementation was this one from TEFList: http://www.teflist.com/blog/2010/10/02/record-and-send-a-video-introduction/. If you want the HTML code to deploy it on your site just email support@mailVU.com.

We appreciate your questions and comments. Ideas and thoughts are always welcomed!

Can you save any of the video files? (to computer before the get deleted from the site?)

  • http://mailvu.com mailVU

Hi Jessica. You can change the self destruct date from 30 days to 365 days if you like, so you can continue viewing the video for a longer time period.

We are currently developing an API which will allow us to send videos without going through email; we’d just send you the link to the message. You can then display the video wherever you see fit. We are still building our API and plan to have the specification done by end of this week. email or video mail support@mailVU.com if you’d like to get the API document.

Thanks for a really great tool. I was using a free version of eyejot but it only gave us 1 minute (not bad for making you tighten a message, but sometimes you need more time.)

Quick question: Could you edit the video prior to upload? Or even attach a premade video (in the right format of course)? This would extend the usability in my view (pardon the pun).

Hi Martin. We allow video uploads in our Business Plan. It will be available for sign-up online very soon. If you need faster access contact info@mailVU.com and we can set it up for you.
